Poutine…en Los Angeles? C’est vrai!!!

Poutine.
To know it is to love it.

Legend says that poutine was named when a hungry Eddy Lanaisse walked in to a restaurant and requested a take-out order of french fries and cheese curds shaken up in a bag.  The owner shouted, “ça va faire une maudite poutine!” (loosely translated: That will make a damned mess!) and the tasty “mess” of poutine was born.  Sauce was later added to the concotion, and today poutine is a staple among snack foods, escpecially in Montréal and other parts of Quebec and Northeastern Canada.  Though in the past poutine has been viewed as low-brow, it has recently gained popularity as a gourmet food, and has been reinvented by many Canadian and American chefs. The traditional recipe of gravy, cheese curds, and french fried potatoes has practically become a delicacy!

Sound like a pile of deliciousness? You’re in luck.  LA’s very own Poutine Truck will be paying us a visit on October 15th for the opening of Entitled: New Works by Ryan Garton.  Be sure to stop by, see some amazing art, and sample one of Montréal’s best kept secrets!

This week at M Bird Studio

This week’s highlights:

Farzaneh’s back!   Our world traveler has returned for a moment before jetting off to South America.  She’s here through October 1st and will return for the holiday season from Tuesday December 6th – Saturday December 24th.  Call us to reserve your appointment now, because she is IN DEMAND  :)   If you have wanderlust as well, follow her blog at theflowerninja.wordpress.com as she roams the planet, spreading love and Davines education wherever she goes.

Josh is at it again:  Yesterday he styled a major Mad men updo on me.  I headed to the gym and who would’ve guessed?  That updo looked just as soft and gorgeous as it did when I was in his chair!  Brides, Debutantes, and Red Carpet Divas take note – his updos will go the distance!  Our new favorite product for a soft, natural look with major hold: Davines Wonder Wax.  Smells like cookie dough and holds even the most complicated styles in place – who could ask for more?

Davines Color Feast!

This past weekend we were lucky enough to host our first Davines education event!  We welcomed stylists from all over LA to experience a hair color demonstration and interactive class.  The lovely Ezra of Tlön Salon discussed the many facets of the Davines Color Space – the Mask color line, as well as the Glorifying and Alchemic lines.  One of the reasons we love Davines so much is that the products restore so much shine to the hair.  The same is true of the color line.  Our model commented on the shine factor after she was done.  It was gorgeous!

We all really enjoyed the event – we met lots of new people and saw a few old friends in the process.  Thanks so much to Julie, our hair model, Ezra, and all the folks at Bassett and Davines for making this happen.  We look forward to seeing you all again soon!

A Belgian Star

Okay, so it’s been a little more than a month, but for September, our Beer of the Month will be…..

A nice light Belgian lager, Stella is the go-to beer for many a pubgoer. Even though it’s become a staple of the Anheuser-Busch family of beers, its famous label still pays homage to the original Belgian Brewery, opened in 1336 and later taken over by Sebastian Artois.

Fun, random facts about the beer you thought you knew:

The largest size sold is ONE LITER!! It comes out for Christmas, to honor the beer’s roots as a specialty holiday beer. Bring one to your next family function.

Stella, like all Belgian beers, has a specific glass out of which it is served. The company takes this very seriously and famously has a 9 step pouring ritual, which has even developed into a competition.  Names of the steps included The Sacrifice, The Beheading, and The Liquid Alchemy.   This competition is no joke!

So, there you go – we’ll be enjoying out Stella for the month of September.   Get on over here, book a blowout, and enjoy the last fleeting bits of summer while you crack open an ice cold Belgian brew!

Calling all creative minds!

One of M Bird’s goals is to foster a creative community as we grow here in Culver City.  We have been lucky to meet so many artistic, innovative, creative people in the few months we’ve been open. Stay tuned for our next event – details will be coming soon, but save the date for October 15th!  Our first few events have been quite a success and we’re looking forward to many more.

On that note, I’d just like to reach out to all of you artists out there – we’re currently adding to our events calendar.  Are you looking for a space to show off your creative genius?  We want to hear your ideas!  Just to give you a taste of the possibilities: we have bimonthly art shows, shopping events, holiday parties, live music, and more on the horizon.  If you are interested in collaborating with us, or if there is something you’d love to see happening at M Bird Studio, shoot us a message – who knows what we can come up with together!

Check out our facebook for pictures of past events, or contact Susannah@mbirdstudio.com with inquiries.

New obsession….

OI/OIL: Absolute Beautifying Potion

Our stylists love it, our clients are obsessed, and we’re nearly sold out after only two weeks! It features natural Roucou oil, which makes it a fantastic alternative to other (read: silicone-based, artificial, not-so-great-for-the-health-of-your-hair-or-the-planet) serums and oils that claim to do the same thing.

What it does:
finishes, tames, protects, smoothes, calms, softens, and hydrates hair.
the list goes on and on…
It can be used on dry or wet hair, curly or straight, and it smells amazing!!!

Why you’ll LOVE it:
Roucou oil is a naturally derived seed oil with antioxidant, healing, and, some say, spiritual properties!
The Roucou oil used by Davines is Fair-Trade, which means that its sale brings sustainable, socially responsible business practices to the local Brazilian economy where it’s harvested.
The packaging is made with low-impact, reuseable, food grade plastic.

The details:
Here’s where I geek out on you, because I am so fascinated by this product, not only because of what it does, but because of where it comes from.

Roucou Oil. You might think you’ve never heard of it, but chances are that you know it well by one of many other names. Bixa, Achiote, Annato, – sound familiar? That’s because this plant has been a staple for centuries. It’s used as a food colouring in many countries, as a spice in Central and South America, and was even used to make body paint by the Maya, Aztec and Oaxacan cultures.
Called Urucu in it’s native Brasil, this oil is extracted from the fruit of a small tree that grows deep in the Amazon rainforest. As with every product in the Essential Haircare line, Davines offsets the environmental impact of manufacturing OI/OIL by creating and protecting new rainforests throughout the world.

This is truly the most versatile haircare product I’ve ever used. It can be used as a shine serum on dry hair, a smoothing agent on wet hair, a protective coat before blowdrying, a silkening treatment on curly or wavy hair. It’s light enough to use on fine hair, but an extra dose is strong enough for coarse, frizzy hair.
It’s like the allspice of haircare – you can’t live without it! Thanks Davines!

Thank you for a fantastic Grand Opening!!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out this weekend for our Grand Opening party!  We had an amazing time and we especially enjoyed meeting so many new people.  A few highlights:

Troy and the folks from T’s California BBQ – seriously, these guys were AMAZING!!  They served up incredible pork tacos, which were the talk of the party.  We just kept going back for more :)   They were super friendly and professional and everyone was extremely impressed with their service.  We would LOVE to have them back anytime!  If you are looking for another taste of T’s California BBQ, definitely check them out at the Culver City farmer’s markets or at http://www.tscaliforniabbq.com/ !

Special Thanks go out also to Raiza, our beautiful bartender, Alexander DCD Smith, who’s a delight to work with,  and DJ Joey Dubois, who stepped in with his music collection as a last minute life saver!

Here are some pictures of all the excitement. Plus, don’t forget:  We’ll be announcing the winner of the raffle at the end of August, so if you love The Green Jeannie as much as we do, there’s still time to win her!
